Popularity and Tradition: The BJJ GI Kimono by R. Lewis
A trend that is going on now with the Brazilian jui Jitsu community is whether or not one type of BJJ Gi is better than another. Some of the people are claiming that the lighter one is better when trying to shed off those extra pounds while others who are competing in a BJJ tournament say that it helps them when competing. Some of the people simply like the feel of the lightweight bjj gi over the heavier fabric. The BJJ practitioners will rely on the heavy kimonos because this is what they have been used to for so long. For people who practice Jiu Jitsu often and train for a large number of hours a day, this is the type that they prefer. In the recent years, more and more people have started to switch to the lighter material and have adapted their usual kimonos allowing them to still be considered a bjj gi. For some of those people, they simply like the tradition of the older style wear and will stick to it until the end simply because they believe they should.
The lightweight bjj gi is going to not be as durable as the heavier one and is going to need to be replaced quite frequently. If you want something that does not have to be replaced once every so many months, you will want to go with a gold weave bjj gi. If you want to be comfortable when competing however, you will want to go with the lighter material kimono. When shopping for kimonos, you might want to look to the judo gis, vale tudo shorts or the judo uniforms. Any of these can be worn when competing.
The single weave or pearl weave gi is what you are going to be looking for when you are shopping around for a kimono that is going to be a lighter material. If you are new to the scene and do not know yet which one is which, you will have to look on the tag to find out what the material is consisted from and what size is right for you. If you still are unsure, you could use this as a reference. The A2 bjj gi that weighs in at 4 pounds is going to be lightweight while a bjj gi size A over 5 pounds is going to be heavier and sturdier than the other.
